This past weekend, November 25–26, 2023, marked a significant milestone for our team as we hosted the inaugural Barcelona Game Jam at our office. This event was designed to be a melting pot of talent, bringing together developers, designers, and enthusiasts from various sectors to create and showcase games.

The Barcelona Game Jam was driven by a spirit of community and collaboration. It aimed to connect people passionate about game development and web3 applications from around the world.

In essence, the PKPs and MPC wallets generated within this combined network can seamlessly determine the conditions under which a PKP should sign – namely, the "when, why, what, and if".

This collaboration also paves the way for more intricate and flexible account abstraction solutions. Developers will have the ability to create an MPC wallet with Lit and utilize the signature as the official signatory for a smart contract account. This not only enhances transaction validation within Lit's network but also makes it programmable.

Addressing the user experience, Openfort's multi-chain account support, combined with gas sponsorship and streamlined blockchain interactions, promises a smooth and efficient user journey.

For creating abstracted wallets, the partnership will enable portable signature verification by allowing users to interact with different blockchain networks using the same wallet. The PKPs can be added as a signer to an abstracted wallet for multi-signatures, with a Lit Action holding the logic for when the PKP should sign.

## Introducing Openfort: Gaming Wallet-as-a-service
Openfort’s set of SDKs and APIs enables companies and game studios to create and manage fully customizable onchain accounts. End-users and players can enjoy games and gamified applications without being familiar with the concept of wallets, through two groundbreaking innovations: Abstracted Infrastructure Layer and Programmable Transactions.

### Abstracted Infrastructure Layer
Account Abstraction (AA) enables onboarding and user flows on par and superior on the long term with that of web2. This approach grants developers the flexibility and control they need to create unique and personalized gaming experiences: custom access control to players’ accounts, gas sponsorship, batching transactions and even privacy features.

### Programmable Transactions
Openfort extends the scope of on-chain transactions with smart accounts, leveraging session keys to safeguard accounts and ensure keys only authorize intended transactions.

Session Keys facilitate secure and straightforward programmatic transactions, offering additional features such as permissioning, autonomous signature, and fraud prevention, all while maintaining a non-custodial design and developer flexibility.

## Where We Are Today
We are working towards a future where developers can create games that interact with user assets seamlessly and on the user's terms without compromising interoperability. There will be no need to develop a separate mobile wallet or desktop client to enjoy the benefits of closed-loop experiences.

## What's the problem with current wallets?

In the crypto world, wallets are widely used for storing and managing private keys, which are needed to sign and submit transactions to networks like Ethereum. However, they are limited in terms of features and use cases.

## Introducing Smart Accounts

What if we treated wallets like computer programs? That's where our concept of "smart wallets" comes in. These wallets can be customized with specific rules and settings, allowing for more complex features to be added over time.

When we drop the UI, we create "smart accounts," which serve as a solid primitive for engineers to build upon, allowing them to combine and craft primitives as they see fit.

## Benefits for Game Developers, Players, and Builders

Smart accounts offer numerous advantages:

- Seamless generation and claiming of ownership through various authentication methods, enabling "invisible" accounts.
- Sponsored transactions by another address, making transactions more cost-effective and seamless for players and developers.
- Gas policies that eliminate the hassle of managing multiple tokens for transactions, enabling the use of any ERC20 tokens with discernible value to cover gas fees.
- Scoped asset permission for games, allowing them to perform transactions on behalf of the player with limited authority and stricter player permission controls.
- Flexible ownership transfer for backup, recovery, or other purposes.
- Easy integration with APIs and SDKs for a white-label solution that fits into existing game development workflows.
- Deployment on different blockchains for interoperability and reduced risk of address sniping.
- Account subscriptions for customizable and convenient transaction approvals.
- Asset delegation to grant temporary or permanent control for staking, voting, or managing investments.
- Batching multiple transactions into a single transaction, reducing gas fees and improving transaction efficiency.

Public Beta Release April 2023

Attending the Game Developer Conference in San Francisco this week gave US a firsthand look at the exciting growth and innovation happening in the blockchain gaming space.

From panels and workshops to announcements, it's clear how vibrant the gaming industry is. Studios and developers have tons of new games to share, and the community is open to new concepts -incorporating blockchain is one of them.

The message is clear: web3 gaming is still in its experimental stage, but it’s alive, growing, and it’s already working. Our thesis for blockchain gaming looks like this:

- We need fun games that people like.
- Reduce all barriers to entry and make Web3 add-ons opt-in.
- Have all blockchain elements seamless.
- People should like the game more than they hate the concept of "NFTs".
- Players stay and play.

At its core, it’s about helping developers utilize blockchain tech to provide a new experience and business model that wasn't possible before. They can create innovative games, experiment with ownership and incentives, and connect with players in new ways.

Web3 lets you achieve this. This new gaming paradigm is already working — and creates abundance and ownership for the first time in the industry.

We believe web3 and gaming will rely on three key things to grow further:

1. Increasing exposure for web3 games, aka web3 as an attack vector for indie studios.
    
    Indie publishers are well-positioned to figure out successful models for web3 games (and to be acquired by a big player). They can take risks where bigger players can't or where opportunities seem small today. The next wave of innovation will be driven by indie game devs with enough support.
    
2. Making the user experience easier, which unlocks experimentation to figure out models that work.
    
    Let’s make games more affordable and easier to use. This will make it possible for more gamers and developers to participate in the space regardless of their technical expertise. It sounds obvious to say, but that’s still very much a problem. Spaces worth exploring include:
    
    - Player onboarding experience
    - In-game economic models
    - The analytic stack
    - Genertive AI
    - UA and attribution models

3. Web3 games launching web2.
    
    Faced with an overly extractive web3-native audience, top web3 studios are experimenting with launching web2 gameplay while slowly releasing blockchain elements.

Overall, the web3 gaming space is still in its early stages, but the potential for growth and innovation is immense. I met several amazing and talented web3 gaming founders, people that both build games and infrastructure for games. One thing was clear: infrastructure companies won't succeed unless games succeed. That’s why we must align incentives if we want more games to launch.

As more gamers and developers enter the space, we can expect it to go viral one day. We will see games top charts, go viral on social media, and pave the way for a new generation. That new wave will be so much better because 1) it will pay developers much more than current revenue-sharing models, and 2) it will be free for players! It’s crazy to think about, but a game could actually be free-to-play and pay players more than any current revenue-sharing model!

We're actively brainstorming in the space and figure out current and upcomming roadblocks is crucial. When leaving GDC we had two thoughts in mind:

1. In the short term, 10-50 million will be playing Web3 games without realizing it, through Web2.5 games. Probably millions by the end of this year.
2. In 3-5 years, hundreds of millions will be playing 'true' Web3 games, e.g. Defi-enabled Open Economy MMOs. Games that dare heavily lean into the novelties and quirks of crypto, dare rethink paradigms and genres from the ground up. Not replicating familiar facades with a crypto backend.
